Want your package delivered by a drone? Since today Amazon has received approval from the FAA to start delivering packages with drones. Amazon is finally an ‘air carrier’. It has not been disclosed when your package will be deliverd by a drone but it won’t take long. Amazon has test sites in the Northwest area as well as in the Vancouver area.
Amazon will use it’s hexagon carrier drone that was announced last year. Although testing is now possible on a wider scale, it will probably take while before your first package is delivered by a drone. The FAA needs to set up regulations for these kinds of deliveries.
A statement made by David Carbon noted “This certification is an important step forward for Prime Air and indicates the FAA’s confidence in Amazon’s operating and safety procedures for an autonomous drone delivery service that will one day deliver packages to our customers around the world,”
Amazon is not the first one to receive the FAA approval. UPS is delivering prescriptions for CVS in North Carolina.
It’s no secret that Amazon wanted to deliver with drones, but the Covid-19 situation might have changed things. With more online sales in the last few months , but the pandemic may serve as an added push for the company. Amazon has generated double its profits in the last quarter. More than 100,000 additional workers, but it seems that delivering orders via flying and rolling delivery bots may be another part of its plan to keep up with the added demand.
